How Zinc Anode Caps Work
Corrosion is an electrochemical process that occurs when dissimilar metals come into contact with moisture, forming a galvanic cell. Similar to how a battery works, moisture acts as the electrolyte, while the various metals—such as bolts, nuts, and fittings—serve as the positive and negative terminals.
In this system, the more negatively charged metal (the anode) corrodes first, sacrificing itself to protect the more noble, or positive, metal. Zinc is significantly more negative than most common metals, making it ideal as a sacrificial anode. As long as zinc remains, the protected component is effectively shielded from corrosion.
Zinc Anode Caps are designed to protect system components made from steel, cast iron, ductile iron, brass, and copper. The number of caps used directly impacts the length of protection—more zinc means longer service life.
For optimal performance, Zinc Anode Caps should be installed on all exposed bolts and fittings, particularly in corrosive or moisture-prone soil conditions.
